Since opening in 2002, the Hospice House of Williamsburg has remained committed to providing compassionate care to guests and their families as they navigate the end of life. We’ve been honored to serve nearly 3,000 guests in that time, even continuing our service during the unprecedented times of COVID, and plan to care for thousands more as we move into the future.

If you have visited the Hospice House of Williamsburg in recent months, you know we have begun a multi-phase renovation. The first phase of the renovation was completed in 2023 and included the common spaces. The second phase, completed in 2024, transformed the second floor of the house where staff and administrative offices are located.

While the Hospice House of Williamsburg remained open for the first two phases of work, the third and final phase involves renovation to our lobby area and four guest rooms and requires us to close for approximately 12 weeks, effective July 22, 2024.

We believe that the quality of end of life care we provide for our guests and their loved ones would be compromised if we tried to operate in conjunction with a project of this magnitude, and we are not willing to risk an unpleasant experience for any guest or family.

Please read on in the FAQs below for more detail about this project and how it will help us serve the community in the many years to come.

While this disruption in service does sadden us because we always want to be open and ready for those who need us, we are encouraged because we know that we’ll re-open better and positioned many more years of service.

FAQ’s

How long will the Hospice House of Williamsburg be closed?

Approximately 12 weeks starting in late July 2024.

Will the construction work help improve Hospice House of Williamsburg services?

Yes.

This closure marks the third and final phase of a planned renovation of the Hospice House of Williamsburg, involving a reimagined front lobby, clinical area, and redesign of the four guest suites. The first phase of the renovation was completed in 2023 and included renovations of the common spaces. The second phase, completed in 2024, transformed the second floor of the house where staff and administrative offices are located.

Included in this phase of the renovation, among other projects, are the following improvements:

·        Additional space in guest suites that will allow for more family members and visitors to be with loved ones during the end of the life care.

·        Addition of a nurse station to better serve guests.

·        Upgraded technology for clinical care and guest experience.

·        Enhanced consultation spaces for families to meet.

·        Upgraded HVAC.

Why does the Hospice House of Williamsburg have to close for this phase of the renovations?

Our original plan was to complete the lobby area before tackling two of our four guest rooms, allowing us to remain open throughout the work. However, we feel that the quality of end of life care we provide for our guests and their loved ones would be compromised if we tried to operate in conjunction with a project of this magnitude, and we are not willing to risk an unpleasant experience for any guest or family.

What are the total cost of renovations?

$650,000. Renovations were funded through a special endowment of funds raised to honor Sterling Nichols, a community leader in construction of the Hospice House of Williamsburg over 20 years ago.

Who is completing renovations?

Hospice House of Williamsburg Board Member Scott Wise, son-in-law of Sterling Nichols, who led the original construction, is overseeing the work and working with a variety of local subcontractors. Many subcontractors have donated their time and services to help make the renovation possible within the allowable budget.

How many guests will be impacted during this time?

Up to 50 guests, based on historic data, will not be able to receive Hospice House of Williamsburg services given the likely length of the closure.

Where will guests go in the interim? Will anyone be helping place those folks during the closure?

Hospice House of Williamsburg is one of only 50 social hospices in the nation and the only one of its kind in the region. During the time of this closure, staff will continue to help community members navigate options for end of life care. While medical hospice services and home hospice services are very different from those offered at Hospice House of Williamsburg, the team is committed to ensuring the community has the information to access support where they can.

How and where will updates to the project be posted?

Weekly video updates will be posted on the Hospice House of Williamsburg social media accounts and written updates and photos will be published on the news section of our website.

Regular email updates will be provided, too. Register to receive newsletter updates from the Hospice House of Williamsburg HERE.

Will the closure impact staff?

No layoffs will be made as a result of the closure. Hospice House of Williamsburg staff will utilize the construction time to connect throughout the community, complete additional training and prepare for the re-opening. They also stand ready for presentations to groups of any size. Contact Brandon Randall at 757-603-6104 for more information.

What can volunteers do in the closure time?

Volunteers are always needed for many things at the Hospice House of Williamsburg. Volunteers are encouraged to continue to get involved in projects like maintaining the garden area, fundraising, community outreach, special projects, planning the re-opening celebration and more. Contact Kelcey Moeller at 757-345-5195 for more information.
