Our mission at Hospice House & Support Care of Williamsburg (HHSCW) is to enhance the quality of living for individuals facing the last phases of life and to support the people they love. Taking care of our loved ones is perhaps the our most important responsibility. Through our lifetime, many of us also support charities that make a difference in our lives and we wish to leave a legacy for them as well.
In recognition of National Estate Planning Week, HHSCW hosted a reception this week for our Legacy Society. Members of this society have remembered HHSCW in their estate plans. We are thankful to Williamsburg Landing and Morrison’s Flowers & Gifts for helping us honor these forward-thinking individuals and couples. Their support will help to ensure the future of HHSCW for generations to come.
Congress recognized the need for estate planning in 2008 with House Resolution 1499 designating a National Estate Planning Week. The resolution estimated that 120 million Americans did not have up to up-to-date estate plans to protect themselves or their families in the event of sickness, accidents, or untimely death. The resolution encouraged the distribution of estate planning information by professionals to all Americans.
A decade later, many people remain unaware that the lack of estate planning may cause their assets to be disposed of to unintended parties. If you do not have a will or estate plan or want to add a charity designation to Hospice House & Support Care of Williamsburg or your favorite cause, I encourage you to talk to talk with a professional advisor.
Making plans to care for your loved ones and considering a legacy gift to your favorite charity are important decisions. And, both decisions will leave a lasting legacy.
