This week is National Volunteer Week and it’s also the week after the Hospice House Guild volunteers received the first annual Outstanding Service to Seniors award, presented by Williamsburg Landing.  Hospice House Guild Volunteer President Bernice Todd accepted the award from Williamsburg Landing CEO and President Greg Storer on behalf of the 350 Hospice House Guild volunteers. Mr. Storer presented the award at the Williamsburg Community Foundation Grant Award luncheon on April 19, 2017.

I am inspired and amazed at the commitment, compassion, selflessness, and tireless support of the Hospice House Guild volunteers. On a recent Sunday, I stopped in at the Hospice House to find a friendly volunteer receptionist, greeting guests as they came to visit their loved ones. Another tireless volunteer worked to prepare silent auction signs for the Hike for Hospice event, after she had already volunteered 40 hours that week. Yet another volunteer was serving as a patient volunteer, sitting quietly with a guest at Hospice House.

Volunteers also support HHSCW by raising awareness and funds through their support of special events, maintaining the gardens and grounds, coordinating open houses, and providing front desk reception. The annual value of these volunteer services is more than $294,000.

These gifts of time and heart are but a small representation of the many volunteer roles and the more than 14,000 hours annually that Hospice House Guild volunteers contribute. Hospice House & Support Care of Williamsburg (HHSCW) could not provide the services we do without the support of this amazing group of volunteers.

The Hospice House Guild volunteers support families at their most vulnerable time, in their homes, in the Hospice House, and in the hospital. These volunteers work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Here are a few recent pictures of some of volunteers:

Thank you, Hospice Guild volunteers, for giving the gift of yourself! Your recent “Outstanding Service to Seniors Award” is so deserving, and all of us at Hospice House & Support Care of Williamsburg congratulate and appreciate you!
